HarmoniMD Mobile In-patient Hospital Visit Management App

HarmoniMD Mobile is a companion application to HarmoniMD HIS, a turn-key Hospital Informatics System. it's specifically oriented to nursing duties and doctors doing their rounds. The app makes it easy add, or track vitals, diagnoses, procedures, orders and medication administrations.

When I first joined the team at MedWave, I was hired to quickly build a simplified mobile version of their desktop medical records application. Before my hire, they had attempted to build an iOS version with previous developers without success. After looking over the project, I determined that build a hybrid mobile app would be best way to get a usable product up and running in a timely fashion.

By building all of the screens as web views using JavaScript as the scripting language and compiling them as a Cordova mobile application, it would be our best method of rolling project quickly. Going this route allowed me to create a platform agnostic code base for both iOS and Android hardware that could leverage the built-in platform hardware advantages. It is built to work in low bandwidth situations, with portions working offline when network service is intermittent. Using this software direction also lends itself to using inexpenive off the shelf devices which lowers the cost of implementation.

One of the key features of this application was to make it a multi-lingual platform, so the user can work in their native language. It's currently setup to work in Spanish, English and French, with Portuguese in the works. HarmoniMD Mobile is currently being used in several hospitals in México including: Hospital FUCAM, Centro Oncológico International, Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez, Shriner's, Obesity Control Center, Hospital BC and others.

The idea of HarmoniMD Mobile was to make and application that replaces paper without being more complex to use. QR coded wristbands can be scanned using a tablet's built in camera and patient data can be gathered and reviewed immediately. A key piece of paper replacement is costume Electronic Clinical Documents (ECDs) that can be taylored to any hospital workflows, so the correct patient data can be collect quickly and accurately.
