HarmoniMD Cloud Based Health Informatics System (HIS)

HarmoniMD HIS is a full service cloud based Electronic Medical Records (EMR) platform. From tracking patient healthcare to accounting, billing, inventory management, or other tasks, HIS can be configured and placed into operational use faster than any other EMR platform on the market. This can be done because the internal design is inherently different the all other EMR/HIS systems. It can be easily integrated with any HL7 compliant laboratory and imaging systems.

After already proving that the HarmoniMD Mobile app could run fast on inexpensive hardware with much slower processors, it was obvious that the software needed to pivot away from the heavily server oriented codebase. I suggested that we take from what had already been created for the mobile application and develop a fully abstacted client/server based approach using many of the same methods. This would use the power of each user's browser to free up the server to just process data for the database and run as fast as possible.

The current system is now running on an Azure cloud based server stack with Medwave's own flavor of OData's REST environment. The client-side of the application stack is a dynamic template workflow system I've developed that leverages many open-sourced frameworks to create essentually a prototype-to-production environment. It also employs a multplexed approach to consuming data helping it render more quickly. The client-side code base has been my focus at MedWave, and has become the largest project I've worked on with almost 10 years of continuous product evolution.

The structure of HIS is based on logic template modules that can be as simple as a single form, or a complex set of nested workflows. These modules can contain dynamic partials of content that are loaded based on user actions, permissions, facility location, or other defined metrics. It is built to work in low bandwidth situations, with portions working offline when network service is intermittent. This software direction lends itself to using inexpenive off the shelf devices which lowers the cost of implementation. A huge positive of using logic rules in a design system like this, is instead of actually coding, the workflow developer just places ternary rules in that are based on actions, or situations. If a bug, or edge case issue arises in the system, it can be quickly fixed system wide without any down time to compile and reinstall.

One of the key features of this application was to make it a multi-lingual platform, so the user can work in their native language. HarmoniMD HIS is currently setup in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese. As of now, it's running in dozens of facilities from California to Chile, including: Shriner's Childrens Hospitals in Mexico, Hospital FUCAM, Centro Oncológico International, Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez, Obesity Control Center, Hospital BC.
